Breakfast Smoothie

This smoothie is a great start to any day for someone who needs a bunch of healthy calories to get going, quickly.

When I try to lose weight I typically struggle with eating ENOUGH calories.  That’s right, I struggle to eat enough calories.  I go into weight loss mode and I can chomp through grilled chicken and salad with no problem, which has very little calories.  Definitely not enough for a guy my size to be able to maintain.

With that, I came up with this recipe to make sure I start the day off with a bunch of calories.  This smoothie as is, is, 700 calories.  Yes. Seven hundred.  Most smoothies are actually fairly high in calories, but I made sure this one had an extra boost, to meet my requirements.

I use a banana for potassium and texture.  The berries are frozen for texture as well.  The strawberries are because they are tasty, the blueberries are in there because they are what people like to call a super food.  I’m not a fan of blueberries, but hardly notice them in this smoothie.  We also need protein, so I use unflavoured whey protein from Quest. This doesn’t add any extra flavours or sweeteners to help keep things simple and healthy.  The secret weapon here is the coconut milk, not light.  This adds fat and calories which is what helps me get through the day, day after day.  And finally, we have tart cherry juice.  I quite like cherries, and they are high in anti-inflammatories.

Recipe:

1 – Banana (Not frozen)
80 grams Frozen Strawberries
80 grams Frozen Blueberries
1 – scoop Unflavoured Protein Powder
200ml Coconut Milk (not light)
1/2 cup Tart Cherry Juice

Toss in the blender in the order above for best results, and enjoy!  This makes about 32 ounces.
